Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jay Hawkins

Hawks Lose Close One to AUM

ROME, Ga. – The Shorter men's basketball team returned to the Winthrop-King Centre on Tuesday night and faced Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). Two clutch free-throws sunk by AUM's Sam Youngblood with five seconds remaining in the second half put the game out of reach as the Warhawks went on to win 79-75.

Mark Wilcox Jr. recorded a double-double on the night, as he paced the Hawks with 24 points and finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with an assist and two blocks. Teammate Grant Atchley was lethal from behind the arc in the game, as he converted four of five 3-point attempts for 12 of his 17 points. Atchley also added six rebounds and an assist, while Jaden Dunham finished third in scoring on Shorter with 14 points and had five rebounds and five assists.

The game itself was filled with thrilling, back-and-forth action. The first half ended with AUM (11-16, 8-11) up 38-31. The Hawks finally tied the game for the first time since the 7:11 mark of the first half with 1:01 left in the second half, via a Ricky Knight Jr. layup.

AUM's James Graham answered back soon after with a dunk, and the two made free throws by Youngblood with seconds remaining sealed the deal. Youngblood's teammate Roderick Smith put up a game-high 26 points in the visitors' win, along with six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Youngblood, himself, finished with 17 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Shorter (5-18, 2-16) will be back in action at the Winthrop-King Centre on Thursday night, as they will face Union University at 7:30 p.m.
