Hawks Soar Past Panthers Behind Strong Bats

ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks defeated the Clark Atlanta University Panthers 12-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

The Hawks improve to 9-3 on the season while Clark Atlanta is now 2-9.

Shorter scored the first five runs of the game in the bottom of the first. Four of these runs came from a Justin Barnes grand slam. However, before the grand slam, Cameron Tilly singled to right field, and this scored Norman Leon to plate the first run of the game. Shorter added an additional run in the home half of the second. Tilly doubled down the left field line to score Leon.

Clark Atlanta plated its only run of the game in the top of the third.

Joshua Hayes doubled to left to score Kody Krause to plate the next run for the Hawks in the bottom of the third. This made the score 7-1 Shorter.  

The score remained 7-1 Shorter until the bottom of the eighth when the Hawks added five more runs. Tyler McWillie hit a solo home run to plate the first run of the inning. Later on, Lyndon Weaver hit his second grand slam of the week to plate the final four runs of the game.

Tilly went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Weaver went 2-for-4 with a run scored, four RBI and two walks. Barnes went 1-for-3 with a run scored, four RBI and a walk.

McWillie (W, 1-0) got the start for the Hawks in today's game. He tossed 2.1 innings, striking out three and giving up one hit.

The Hawks return to action and resume Gulf South Conference (GSC) play on Friday at the University of West Florida. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
