ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks defeated Delta State University 12-5 on Sunday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex to conclude the series with the Statesmen. With a doubleheader sweep yesterday and a win today, Shorter swept Delta State to start Gulf South Conference (GSC) play.
The Hawks improve to 8-3 on the season and 3-0 in GSC play. Delta State is now 3-5 on the season and 0-3 in GSC play.
Delta State plated the game's first two runs in the top of the third.
Shorter answered back with two runs in the home half of the fourth to tie the game.
Justin Barnes singled to left center, and this scored
Cory Mason for the inning's first run. Shortly after this,
Andres Ferreiro grounded out to score
Lyndon Weaver for the inning's second run.
The Hawks plated three additional runs in the bottom of the seventh after
Jacob Pajer hit a three-run home run to take the lead in the game. This made the score 5-2 Shorter.
The Statesmen quickly plated three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game again. However, Shorter scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to take control of the game. Four of these runs came from a grand slam from Weaver.
Jakob Woods singled to left to score Barnes to the plate the first run of the eighth. Later in the inning,
Cameron Tilly singled to right field to score Woods and
Kody Krause.
Lyndon Weaver then hit a grand slam to plate the final four runs of the game.
Weaver went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Woods went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Pajer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Barnes went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Carson Cook started for the Hawks in today's game. He tossed five innings, striking out two and giving up one earned run on two hits.
Andrew Asselin got the win in today's game. He pitched 1.1 innings in relief. He gave up one run on one hit.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday and will face the Clark Atlanta University Panthers in a non-conference game. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
