Hawks Sweep Delta State in Doubleheader to Start GSC Play

ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks swept the Delta State University Statesmen on Saturday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex to start Gulf South Conference (GSC) play. The Hawks defeated the Statesmen 12-7 in game one and 12-2 in the nightcap.  

Shorter improves to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in GSC play after the doubleheader. Delta State is now 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in GSC play.   

Game 1, Shorter wins 12-7

The Hawks defeated the Statesmen 12-7 in game one of today's doubleheader.

The game started slow for Shorter, and the Hawks did not score their first run until home half of the sixth. Delta State's starter, Landon Zizmann, tossed five innings for the Statesmen, striking out six and giving up no runs on four hits and four walks.

The Statesmen plated the first two runs of game one in top of the second after two solo home runs. Delta State then scored an additional run in the fourth and three more runs in sixth.

Shorter scored their first two runs of the day thanks to two bases loaded walks in the home half of the sixth. Jacob Pajer walked with the bases loaded to score Andres Ferreiro to score the first run. Shortly after this, Cory Mason walked with the bases loaded to score Kody Krause.

Delta State plated its final run of game one in the top of the seventh.

The bottom of the seventh is when the offense exploded for the Hawks, and they plated 10 runs in this inning. Justin Barnes tripled to right center to start this inning. Ferreiro was then hit by a pitch and Krause walked to load the bases. Jakob Woods then reached on a fielder's choice and this scored Barnes to plate the inning's first run.

Norman Leon then had sac fly to center to drive in Ferreiro. Shortly after this, Cameron Tilly singled to center, driving in Pajer and Woods. The Hawks took the lead after Lyndon Weaver doubled to score Mason and Tilly. Barnes then had his second triple of the inning to drive in Weaver. Ferreiro hit a two-run home run after this to plate the inning's next two runs. Finally, Woods singled to drive in Krause to plate the 10th run of the inning and the final run of game one.

Barnes went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ferreiro went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI. Krause went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Weaver went 2-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI and two walks.

Ethan Hawthorne got the start for the Hawks in game one and tossed three innings, striking out one and giving up three runs on five hits. Trevor Nanney (W, 1-0) pitched one inning in relief, striking out one and giving up one run on one hit.

Game 2, Shorter wins 12-2

Shorter defeated Delta State 12-2 in seven innings in game two of today's doubleheader to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Jonathan Pintaro (W, 3-0) started for the Hawks in game two and pitched the entire game. He was solid over seven innings of work, striking out seven and giving up two runs on four hits.

Jacob Pajer singled through the left side, advanced to second on an error by the Delta State pitcher and advanced to third and scored on an error by the Delta State first baseman to plate the first run of the game for the Hawks in the bottom of the first.

Delta State then plated its two runs of game two after Jake Barlow hit a two-run home run.

Kody Krause hit a three-run home run to plate the next three runs for Shorter in the home half of the second.

The Hawks plated an additional run in the bottom of the third and five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Barnes doubled down the left field line to score Cory Mason to plate the run in the third.

In the fourth, Jakob Woods hit a solo home run to score the first run of the inning. Shortly after this, Pajer doubled down the right field line, and this scored Norman Leon. Lyndon Weaver hit a three-run home run to plate the final three runs of the inning. The score was 10-2 Shorter after this inning.

Shorter plated the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Leon singled to left center to drive in Krause to plate the inning's first run. Cameron Tilly later doubled to drive in Woods to plate the final run of the game.

Pajer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Leon went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Weaver went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, three RBI and two walks. Mason went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Krause went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk.
