Shorter volleyball goes 3-1 at Erskine Tournament

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Shorter volleyball team played four matches in the Erskine Tournament over the weekend at Erskine College. The Lady Hawks faced Erskine and Francis Marion University on Friday and won both matches 3-1. Shorter faced Mars Hill University and Georgia College on Saturday. The Lady Hawks lost 3-0 to Mars Hill and then defeated Georgia College 3-0 in their last match of the weekend.
 
After this weekend, Shorter and Mars Hill are both 3-1 on the season. Erskine and Francis Marion are both 1-3. Georgia College is now 0-4 on the season.
 
Shorter vs. Erskine (Shorter wins, 3-1)
 
The Lady Hawks fell 25-18 in the first set to Erskine, but quickly bounced back and defeated Erskine 25-21 in set two, 30-28 in set three and 25-19 in set four.
 
Lacee Glover, Annie Veldhuis and Emma Richardson led the way for the Lady Hawks offensively in the first match. Glover had 23 kills while Veldhuis had 11 and Richardson had 10. Annie Smith had 25 assists for Shorter and Taryn Cycholl had 21 assists. Madison Sprosty had 25 digs.
 
As a team, the Lady Hawks had 58 kills, five aces, six blocks, 54 assists and 77 digs.
 
Erskine overall had 49 kills, five aces, eight blocks, 48 assists and 67 digs.
 
Shorter vs. Francis Marion (Shorter wins, 3-1)
 
Shorter defeated Francis Marion in the first set 26-24. Francis Marion won the second set 25-23, but the Lady Hawks answered back and defeated Francis Marion 25-21 in the third and fourth sets.
 
Glover again led the way for Shorter offensively in this match with 16 kills. Smith had 23 assists while Sprosty added in 29 digs.
 
The Lady Hawks overall had 52 kills, six aces, 10 blocks, 48 assists and 81 digs against Francis Marion.
 
As a team, Francis Marion had 50 kills, seven aces, eight blocks, 45 assists and 80 digs.
 
Shorter vs. Mars Hill (Mars Hill wins, 3-0)
 
Mars Hill defeated Shorter 25-20 in the first set and 25-17 in the second set of the match. The Lady Hawks were closer in the third set, but they still came up short and lost 25-23.
 
Glover had 10 kills in the match against Mars Hill. Smith had 22 assists while Cycholl and Sprosty both added in 16 digs.
 
As a team, Shorter had 37 kills, six aces, four blocks, 32 assists and 54 digs in this match.
 
Mars Hill had 37 kills, three aces, nine blocks, 34 assists and 54 digs.
 
Shorter vs. Georgia College (Shorter wins, 3-0)
 
The Lady Hawks defeated Georgia College 25-23 in the first set, 25-17 in the second set and 25-23 in the third set.
 
Glover had 15 kills while Smith had 24 assists. Sprosty added in 16 digs while Glover added in 10.
 
Shorter as a team had 44 kills, 10 aces, five blocks, 43 assists and 49 digs.
 
As a team, Georgia College had 20 kills, seven aces, six blocks, 18 assists and 36 digs.

The Lady Hawks return to action in the Flagler Tournament on Friday, September 10 at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. Shorter will face Flagler on Friday, September 10 at 1 p.m. The Lady Hawks will then face Lindenwood University and Embry-Riddle University on Saturday, September 11. The match with Lindenwood is slated to start at noon while the match with Embry-Riddle is slated to start at 3 p.m.
 
Shorter's first home match of the season will be on Wednesday, September 22 against Augusta University. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m. in the Winthrop-King Centre.
