Hawks suffer heartbreaking loss to end season at Gulf South Conference Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. – The Shorter Hawks fell 9-5 to the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) Chargers in the team's third game of the Gulf South Conference (GSC) tournament at Chocolocco Park to conclude their 2021 season.

Shorter ended the season 27-15 overall and 23-14 in GSC play. UAH improved to 21-18 on the season as a result of today's game. The Chargers will go on to face Delta State in the next round of the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Hawks struck first in the bottom of the first courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Bailey Gerstner that scored Justin Barnes. The Hawks then plated another run in the bottom of the second after Matt Christian singled through the left side to score Jakob Woods.

Shorter scored three more runs in the bottom of the third after Nathaniel Butterworth hit a three run home run to left field. Butterworth's home run was the first home run of the GSC tournament for the Hawks.

The Chargers scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth off of a RBI triple from Griffin Rivers that scored John Trousdale. This made the scored 5-1 Shorter.

UAH plated four more runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Three of these four runs came from a Garrett Bodine three run home run.

Carson Villalta then hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth for the Chargers before Zach Duvall scored on a throwing error and Landon Ezzell singled driving in two additional runs. This made the score 9-5 UAH.

Carson Cook got the start for the Hawks and tossed 6.1 innings, giving up three earned runs (five runs total) on five hits while striking out five.
