PENSACOLA, Fla.- The Hawks made their debut in the NCAA Division II Tournament in Pensacola where they faced West Florida. Shorter fought hard but were unable to escape the Argonauts clutches and lost 6-3.
Shorter fell to 27-16 overall and 23-13 in conference play, while West Florida improved to 35-9 overall and 28-8 in conference play.
Shorter struck first when
Cory Mason singled to center field which scored
Jacob Pajer to give Shorter a 1-0 lead. The Argonauts answered in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to give the Argos a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth the Argonauts extended their lead after they hit another two-run homerun that gave the Argos a 4-1 lead. Shorter got the bases loaded in the fifth inning for Nathanial Butterworth who reached on a fielder's choice which allowed
Justin Barnes to score and cut the Argos lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth, West Florida scored two more runs off of a double down the right field line which extended their lead to 6-2. Shorter tried to get a rally going in the top of the sixth inning when
Justin Barnes singled through the right side which scored
Matt Christian which made it a 6-3 game.
The Hawks will play against Alabama Huntsville in an elimination game Friday May 28
th at noon eastern time.
