Hawks send Wolves back to their Den

OXFORD,Ala.—Shorter baseball played their second game of the Gulf South Conference Tournament against in state foe West Georgia at Chocolocco Park. The Hawks came out with a sense of urgency and won 11-6.
 
Shorter improved to 27-14 while West Georgia falls to 18-23 and is eliminated from the conference tournament.
The Wolves were the first to score in the bottom of the first when Brody Wortham singled to shortstop to score Jason Fointno,1-0. In the top of the third, the Hawks took advantage of errors by the Wolves. Kaleeeq Brannigan singled to right field and a throwing error by the right fielder allowed Jacob Pajer to score. Cory Mason doubled to left field to score Branningan and Kobe Jones, 4-1. West Georgia answered back when Collin Moore singled to left center to score Dan Oberst.
The Hawks bats got hot in the top of the fourth when Jakob Woods lead off with a double to left field followed by a bunt that turned into a single from Matt Christian which advanced Woods to third. Then Pajer singled to left center to score Woods. Brannigan hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Christian. The Wolves brought in Andrew Smith to relieve Jack Rasmussen but that did not phase Cory Mason as he reached on a field choice and scored Pajer. Followed up by a double from Bailey Gerstner to score Jones. Nathaniel Butterworth grounded out to shortstop to score Mason, 9-2.

Once again, Shorter took advantage of errors in the top of the sixth to score Butterworth and Gerstner. In the bottom of the seventh Wortham flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly to score Fointno,11-3. The Wolves were able to keep the Hawks to 11 runs and tried to make a come back in the bottom of the ninth when Oberst doubled up the middle to score Justin Johnson, followed by Wortham hitting a triple down the right field line to score Oberst and then Wortham scored on a wild pitch but Ryan Parker struck out Jackson Webb to end the game.
Jonathan Pintaro picked up his 10th win of the season to improve his record to 10-3 while Jack Rasmussen took the loss.
 
Pajer and Gertsner led the Hawks with two hits while Jones, Brannigan, Mason, Woods and Christian each added one hit.
 
The Hawks will have a rematch against University of Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, May 10th with first pitch set for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game before, around 1p.m central time.
