Hawks Battle Chargers in the First Round of the GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala.- The Hawks travelled to Oxford to play the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville in the first game of the GSC Tournament. The Hawks came up just short and lost 6-5.

Shorter fell to 26-14 overall, and 23-13 in conference play. Alabama Huntsville improved to 20-16 overall, and 16-14 in conference play.

Shorter capitalized off their momentum from their previous series against Montevallo in the first inning when Nathanial Butterworth flew out to the second baseman which allowed Jacob Pajer to score and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Charger offense exploded in the third inning scoring four runs and taking a 4-1 lead.  The Hawks began their comeback in the fifth inning when Jacob Pajer tripled to left field which scored Aaron Reardon to cut the lead down to two runs. Then in the sixth inning, Bailey Gerstner singled to second base which allowed Cory Mason to score and make the score 4-3. Luis Acevedo then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Kaleeq Brannigan and tie the game up at four. In the seventh inning Jacob Pajer scored on a wild pitch to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead. In the ninth, UAH scored two runs to take a 6-5 lead. Sadly, the Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback.
