OXFORD, Ala.- The Hawks travelled to Oxford to play the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville in the first game of the GSC Tournament. The Hawks came up just short and lost 6-5.
Shorter fell to 26-14 overall, and 23-13 in conference play. Alabama Huntsville improved to 20-16 overall, and 16-14 in conference play.
Shorter capitalized off their momentum from their previous series against Montevallo in the first inning when Nathanial Butterworth flew out to the second baseman which allowed
Jacob Pajer to score and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Charger offense exploded in the third inning scoring four runs and taking a 4-1 lead. The Hawks began their comeback in the fifth inning when
Jacob Pajer tripled to left field which scored
Aaron Reardon to cut the lead down to two runs. Then in the sixth inning,
Bailey Gerstner singled to second base which allowed
Cory Mason to score and make the score 4-3.
Luis Acevedo then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored
Kaleeq Brannigan and tie the game up at four. In the seventh inning
Jacob Pajer scored on a wild pitch to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead. In the ninth, UAH scored two runs to take a 6-5 lead. Sadly, the Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback.
The Hawks will be back in action Saturday May 8
th at 8pm to face the West Georgia Wolves in an elimination game.
