Hawks fall in series against Bulldogs

ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks fell 13-11 to the Union University Bulldogs on Monday in game three of the series at Shorter. Monday's game followed a doubleheader split with Union on Sunday that included a Kobe Jones two-run walk-off home run for the Hawks in game two. Shorter clinched a playoff berth to the Gulf South Conference (GSC) tournament as a result of the win in game two on Sunday.

Shorter is now 23-13 on the season and 20-13 in GSC play while Union is 15-21 overall and 13-20 in conference play following Monday's game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Union struck first in the top of the second courtesy of a RBI single down the right field line from Jake Baker that scored Josh Bozoian. Union plated its second run of the game in the second after Ryan Lee grounded out to second base scoring Austin Zeitler.

The Bulldogs plated nine more runs in the top of the third before the Hawks scored their first run of the day in the home half of the third. Jacob Pajer hit a home run to left center field.

Shorter scored five more runs, including a home run from Matt Christian, a RBI double from Jacob Pajer that scored Aaron Reardon, a RBI single from Nathaniel Butterworth that scored Pajer, a Union throwing error that scored Cory Mason and a wild pitch that scored Kaleeq Brannigan, in the bottom of the fourth. This made the score 11-6 Union.

Union plated one more run in the top of the seventh while the Hawks scored five more runs in the bottom of the seventh. For Shorter, Matt Christian singled and then advanced to second on a throwing error scoring Jakob Woods and Kobe Jones. Nathaniel Butterworth hit a three-run home run to left field to plate the final three runs of the day for the Hawks. After this inning, the score was 12-11 Union.

Union scored its final run of the game in the top of the ninth after Britt Netterville hit a RBI single to left field that drove in Slater Schield.

Shorter's relief pitchers were strong in game three of the series. Kenny Jinks tossed 2.2 innings in relief, striking out six and giving up two hits and one walk. Kevin Ludden pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits while striking out four.

UP NEXT:

The Hawks will face the University of Montevallo Falcons at Montevallo in a three-game series starting Friday, April 30 to conclude regular season play. First pitch for Friday's game is slated for 6 p.m., and first pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.

The Hawks will then play in the GSC tournament that starts on Friday, May 7 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
