Rome, Ga. --Â The Shorter Hawks men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the Gulf South Spring Championship Series on a late goal to give Lee University a 2-1 edge Sunday afternoon.
Â
Lee had just two shots on goal but both found the back of the net in the home team's heartbreaking loss. Â
With 6 minutes to play, Lee's Fabrizio Scimo flicked on a ball sent from 12 yards out that found its way just under the Shorter cross bar and over Hawks goalkeeper Matthew Shorrock and a Hawk defender.Â
The opening minutes of the match started in flurry as the Hawks took a quick 1-0 lead on a
Hernan Saldana header from
Evan Windham less then 2 minutes in. But LU answered 3 minutes later on a header of their own from Borja Gaspar to lock the game at 1-1 for the next 80 minutes.Â
Shorter would keep pressure on and mustered 10 shots forcing 4 saves by LU keeper Roel Martinez including two from point blank range. For the second straight match, Shorrocks did not record a save. Â
Shorter had the edge in corner kicks as well at 6-2.Â
"If you watched the game, see the stats, it's pretty clear we played really well," said SU coach
Paul Furey. "I think we were just a bit unlucky today. That happens in this game. Â Their keeper had a couple big stops. We just missed on a number of good chances. Yet their two efforts on goal both went their way."
" I was really proud of the way we played. The game can be cruel though sometimes but we're playing well. Â We have a tough match coming up this week that we'll now need to prepare for AUM." Â
The Hawks travel to Alabama on Thursday for their final round robin match with Auburn-Montgomery. Kickoff is at 5:00 CST.Â
