Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Paul Furey

Hawks fall 2-1 at #25 ranked AUM

MONTGOMERY,Ala. -- Jan Gruhn's equalizing goal in the 75th minute on a header from Hernan Saldana was not enough for the Shorter Hawks as Top 25 Ranked Auburn Montgomery answered 5 minutes later to earn the 2-1 victory Thursday night.

The Hawks fought hard for the equalizer as AUM jumped out to an early 1-0 lead ten minutes in on Lucas Batistela goal set up by Renan Dininz.   The explosive counter attack goal was just one of very few chances for either team in a high paced and physical first period.

Set pieces and restarts were the tell tale of the second period as both teams threatened dangerous opportunities and each resulted in a goal.

The Hawks battled hard for 65 minutes before capitalizing on Gruhn's equalizer - it was his first goal of the spring. But Charlie Elliot's stinging header from Eric Bessie found the upper 90 in the 80th minute and powered AUM to the top seed as the Gulf South Spring Series enters tournament play this next week.

"It really was just a tough, physical hard match against a very solid team," said Shorter Coach Paul Furey.  "They were well organized defensively and tough to break down.   I thought it could come down to set pieces and it did. Our guys walked off the field with their heads up - we played well - just came up short against a good top 25 team."

The Warhawks were the first team this spring to out shoot SU 10-7 and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.   Both keepers notched two saves each in the defensive battle.

The Hawks will finish as 4th seed in Pool B and play the 5th seed from Group A on Wednesday.
