Hawks fall in shootout in GSC playoff

Birmingham,AL -  The Shorter Hawks soccer team's spring season ended Thursday night falling 5-4 in a shootout to Delta State in the first round of the Gulf South Spring Championship Series at Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham.

Jackson Wheatley scored the lone goal for the Hawks in regulation knocking in the rebound off a penalty kick in the 59th minute.   Wheatley was  taken down in the box after an initial shot and save to help the Hawks earn their first PK of the spring.

But less then a minute later Hsu-Yang Chang equalized for Delta State. Chang was assisted by Kieren Robins as he cut across the 18 yard line and hit a low shot back towards the near post.

The Statesmen had the better of play in the first half as the Hawks needed to call on goalkeeper Matt Shorrocks for a couple big saves to keep it a  scoreless first half.

The Hawks created more Chances in the second half as now it was DSU keeper Maria Kloepper with 4 second half stops.  Shorter mustered 5 shots in the period despite playing a man down after a Hawk was shown a second yellow card in the 70th minute.

Both teams had one good free kick opportunity in the overtime period just outside their respective boxes but neither could capitalize to end the match as a 1-1 draw.

A shootout would determine who would advance in the GSC Series to play top seed Mississippi College. Kloppis' save on the first shot in the shootout spoiled it for the Hawks despite SU converting the next four (Val Evans, Jan Gruhn, Marcus Pitter and Stan Joseph) aa DSU prevailed 5-4 to keep their season alive.

"It's tough to end the season on a shootout loss," said SU coach Paul Furey.  "But it was a good game overall  after a poor first half for us.  DSU played well.  They were tough and tenacious. Second half, we played hard even with a man down. But we just haven't gotten many breaks of late. Our seniors showed a lot of heart today. (Hernan  Saldana, Shorrocks, Gruhn, Evans and Joseph) Proud of them and for the way they played through this spring.  They're tough competitors and I really felt for them after this one."
