ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks (8-6) started their doubleheader against in-state rivals West Georgia (7-7). They went in behind senior arm Taylor Boisclair who was looking to pick up his second win of the season.
The Hawks did not waste any time opening up the game, as Don Frayer hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Brody Wortham answered for the Wolves in the top of the third with a solo shot down the left-field line. Then the pitching duel commenced, both pitching staff locked down the other lineups forcing extra innings. With a runner starting on second, the Wolves struck first in the top of the tenth. Dan Oberst hit into a fielder's choice that scored a run putting the Wolves ahead 2-1. Collin Moore added one more for the Wolves on an RBI single, taking the lead 3-1. The Hawks were down but not out, as they rallied back in the bottom of the 10th when Kaleeq Brannigan drove in a run—followed up by an RBI single from Frayer tying the game up. The Wolves once again took the lead from an RBI single from John Michael McRae. Ethan Brant added on the Wolves' final run on an RBI single, giving the Wolves a two-run advantage. The Hawks attempted to rally back in the bottom of the 11th, with a sacrifice fly hit by Nathaniel Butterworth.
Coach Wes Timmons and the Hawks will look to take a game from the series as they get ready for game two of the doubleheader.
Game 2:
The Shorter Hawks (9-6) looked to finish their weekend series against West Georgia Wolves (7-8). The Hawks went out behind senior arm Ryan Parker, seeking his second win of the season.
The Wolves wasted no time opening the game up, as they struck first in the top of the first. Moore drove in the game's first run on an RBI single. Jason Fointno drove in another run while
hitting into a double play to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. The Hawks answered back in the bottom of the first from a sacrifice fly from Bailey Gerstner. The Hawks continued to crawl back into the game as Jacob Pajer drove in a run by forcing a walk. Frayer drove in the go-ahead run while reaching safely on a fielder's choice. Then Brannigan hit a three-run home run, giving the Hawks a huge second inning, going up 6-2. In the third inning, Coach Timmons called for the double steal, as Jakob Woods stole second and Cory Mason stole home, taking the lead 7-2. McRae had an RBI single in the top of the fourth, making the game 7-3. The Hawks had an answer for the Wolves, as Gerstner drove in a run, then Frayer scored on a wild pitch. With Butterworth having an RBI double, to take the Hawks to lead 10-3. The Wolves Brant drove in the game's final run on an RBI single, making the final 10-4 as the game was then called due to darkness.
The Hawks and Coach Wes Timmons look to build upon their win in game three. As next weekend they go on the road to West Alabama. Game one will be Friday, March 12th at 7 pm, with the doubleheader being March 13th with the first pitching at 2 pm.
