ROME, Ga – The Shorter Hawks (7-2) finished their home stand Sunday afternoon against Bluefield State College (0-3). Jacob Woods came in clutch with a walkoff single to give the Hawks the win 7-6.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings, as Taylor Boisclair and Daniel Rayfield held their opponents at bay. The Hawks finally broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Justin Barnes. The Hawks added another run-on in the sixth, with Luis Acevedo scoring on an error to make it 2-0. In the seventh inning, Kaleeq Brannigan launched a solo home run to push the Hawks ahead, followed by an RBI double from Acevedo. Boisclair finished his outing after seven innings, having his best start of the season with only two hits, one walk, and 15 strikeouts.
The Hawks bullpen ran into some trouble in the eighth inning; Tanner Brandon drove in a two-run home run for the Blue's to cut the lead down to 5-2. Matt Christian answered back for the Hawks with a solo shot, making the score 6-3. The Blue's did not quit, as they tied the game up in the top of the ninth. The runs being driven in on an RBI single from Roman Moore and a two-RBI double from Shane Reviello, making the score 6-6. The Hawks handled the pressure with a walk-off single coming from Jakob Woods, winning 7-6.
Coach Wes Timmons and the Hawks will return to action next weekend at home against Valdosta State University. The first pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled to be Friday at 11 am and 2 pm, with the series being concluded on Saturday afternoon with a noon start.
