ROME, GA – The Shorter Lady Hawks built on Friday night's win by defeating the University of West Georgia on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon by a score of 89-81.
The Lady Hawks honored two seniors (Jasmine Gaines and Christian Bolden) in a special ceremony after the game. The game itself started out a little shaky for Shorter. The Lady Hawks were down 14-2 mid-first quarter.
However, they battled back, and with 3:53 left in the first half, Shorter's Chatham Brown drove to the basket for a layup, sunk it, got fouled and made her resulting free-throw to tie the game at 32. The game was extremely competitive from that point forward, and the Lady Hawks closed it out nicely in the fourth quarter.
Jasmine Gaines led Shorter in scoring with a game-high 22 points to go along with her seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Alicyn McCollum finished second in scoring for the home team with 17 of her own. The aforementioned Brown and Ansley Barge also accounted for 15 points apiece. In addition, Brown was a beast on the boards, as she snatched ten rebounds to record a double-double on the day.
UWG's Zaria Bankston led the Lady Wolves (5-14) with 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Teammate Mariah Holder added 16 points of her own.
The Lady Hawks (4-13) will be back in action on Tuesday at the Winthrop-King Centre as they will host the Lady Warhawks of Auburn University at Montgomery at 6 p.m.
