ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Lady Hawks got back in the win column on Friday by taking down the University of West Georgia 89-83 in their first of two games against the Lady Wolves at the Winthrop-King Centre this weekend.
Shorter's Chatham Brown had an impressive night on the scoring end, putting up a game-high 26 points on 9-11 shooting to go along with her six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brown was also very efficient from the free-throw line, as she made six of her seven attempts from the foul line. Teammate Jasmine Gaines finished second in scoring on the night with 22 points. Christian Bolden also had a nice night for the Lady Hawks, as she accounted for 20 points of her own including three 3-pointers.
The Lady Hawks found themselves down by ten at 16-6 with 3:19 left in the first quarter. Shorter battled back and tied the game up at one point in the second quarter before going into the locker room down by five (41-36).
The second half proved to be better for the Lady Hawks. With 6:43 left in the third quarter, Gaines knocked down a 3-pointer to put Shorter back on top 46-43. The Lady Hawks never gave up the lead the remainder of the game despite the best effort of the Lady Wolves.
Zaria Bankston of West Georgia (5-13) led her team with 19 points in the loss to go along with her seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Teammate Jayda Dooley added 15 of her own.
The Shorter Lady Hawks (3-13) will have a chance to build on Friday's win, as they will play the Lady Wolves on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Winthrop-King Centre.
