Hawks Stun Argos and Take Series Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Shorter Hawks came off the weekend with a series win over #20 West Florida Argonauts on Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner field with the final score of 3-2 and 9-6.

The Hawks improve their record to 4-2 overall while West Florida gains two loses for a record of 4-2 overall.

Freshman Jacob Pajer lead the team by going 6-9 in the two contests as well as two RBI's and four runs.

Game 1:
The Argos kept the momentum running over the night before and striked first at the lead with run driven in by Cullan O'Shea to take the lead 1-0.  The Argos added another run in the bottom of the second, driven in by True Fontenot. After this, Ryan Parker settled in for the Hawks and kept the Argos to two runs. The Hawks scored their first run of the game from a sacrifice fly from Bailey Gerstner, making the game 2-1.  In the bottom of the 7th, Kevin Ludden came in and shut down the Argos. The Hawks continued to battle their way back into the game, with Jakob Woods scoring on a throwing error to make the game tied in the top of the eighth. But the Hawks were not done yet, as Gerstner lays down the perfect sac bunt to score Aaron Reardon taking the lead 3-2. Ludden held onto the win to gain his first win of the season.

Game 2:
The Hawks carried over their momentum from the last game, as they broke the game open in the first inning with an RBI double from Gerstner. The Hawks continued to score in the second, as Jacob Pajer had an RBI double and Gerstner drove in two more on a single to centerfield.  The Hawks kept 4-0  lead going into the bottom of the third. But The Argos weren't ready roll over in the game, as O'Shea drove in two runs on a double to cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third. Nathaniel Butterworth helped grow the Hawks lead in the fourth, with an RBI double, making it 5-2.

The Hawks went on a hitting and scoring rally in the top of the sixth, with true freshman Jacob Pajer hitting a solo home run. Then Gerstner singled to shortstop followed Nathaniel Butterworth hitting a two-run shot, increasing the Hawks lead 8-2. The Argos tried to tack on some more runs in the bottom of the sixth, O'Shea and Fontenot drove in the runs for the Argos, making the score 8-6 Hawks. Justin Barnes drove in a run in the top of the ninth for the Hawks to give them a three-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Ludden once again comes in big for the Hawks to gain the save as Jonathan Pintaro gaines the win.

Coach Wes Timmons and the Hawks will look to continue to fly high into next weekend for a home stand against Bluefield State College for a three-game series. The first pitch of the doubleheader will be Saturday, February 20th, at noon.
