BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Lady Hawks traveled to Birmingham, AL to open up its season in an Exhibition contest against the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
In the first quarter, the Hawks found themselves trading baskets with the Blazers with buckets from Kelly Picket and Jamilla Harrison. Midway through the first quarter, Shorter gained their largest lead of the game after a 5-0 run leading the Blazers 14-8. By the end of the first quarter, UAB went on a 13-4 run to take a 21-18 lead.
Jasmine Gaines led Shorter with 12 points, followed by Harrison and Lewis with 9 points each. Pickett chipped in 6 points and led the way with 5 rebounds.
Shorter shot 87% from the free throw line, forced 17 turnovers, and held UAB to 17% from the 3 point line.
"I thought we came out in the first 15 minutes and showed a glimpse of what our identity will be moving forward once we are able to piece it together for 40 minutes", said head coach LaSheena Brooks."This was a well coached UAB team and we were able to take away keys, both good and bad, from this game as we move on to the next."
Up next, the Hawks hit the road to face Lipscomb University on November 16th.
