After their heartbreaking 13-12 loss in game one of the weekend series on Friday, the Shorter Hawks bounced back to win both games of the double header on Saturday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
Â
Game 1
Â
The Hawks struck for three runs early in the bottom of the first to take a quick 3-0 lead.
Nathaniel Butterworth started the scoring when he drove in
Kaleeq Brannigan with an RBI single to left,
Cory Mason followed that up with an RBI single to center that scored
Bailey Gerstner, and then Butterworth scored from second on a
Matt Christian pop up that was dropped by the Mississippi College second baseman.
Â
Mississippi College got on the board in the top of the 2
nd to make the score 3-1, but
Luis Acevedo extended the Hawks lead to 5-1 with a massive two run homerun in the bottom of the 3
rd inning. Mississippi College would then score one run in the 4
th and one in the 5
th to make the score 5-3, but that would be the closest the contest would get.
Â
Shorter scored one in the 5
th on a
Matt Christian double that scored
Cory Mason, another in the 6
th on a
Kaleeq Brannigan double that scored
Aaron Reardon, and then three more in the 8
th by way of a
Kaleeq Brannigan SAC fly, and a
Cory Mason 2 RBI single to bring the score to 10-3.
Â
Mississippi College would score two in the top of the 9
th to bring the score to 10-5, but the Hawks would go on to win game one of the double header and even the series at a game apiece.
Chad Davis got the win on the mound for the Hawks throwing 6 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, and striking out 7.
Â
Game 2
Â
Mississippi College scored a run in the top of the 1
st and another in the top of the 4
th to hold a 2-0 advantage over the Hawks in game 2 of Saturday's double header, and the rubber match of the three game weekend series.
Â
However, the Hawks used an explosive 5
th inning to take the lead.
Kaleeq Brannigan tied the contest at 2-2 when he hit a two RBI single to centerfield to score
Justin Barnes and
Jakob Woods. A few batter later
Cory Mason was able to draw a bases loaded walk to bring in the go ahead, and eventual winning run, and propel the Hawks to a 3-2 lead.
Â
Jonathon Pintaro was excellent on the mound for the Hawks once again as he improved his season record to 4-1. Pintaro threw a complete game, 7 innings, allowing only 2 runs, 1 of which was earned, and striking out 9 batters. Pintaro also had an immaculate inning in the top of the 7
th, which is when a pitcher strikes out the side on just nine pitches.
Â
The Hawks will be back in action on Tuesday March 10
th when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to take on Carson Newman University. First pitch is set for 2 pm eastern.
