Hawks Sweep Double Header

Game 2: Shorter 12, Oakland City 1

Game 2 of Saturday's double header between the Shorter Hawks (10-1,1-1) and the Oakland City Mighty Oaks (1-3,0-0) had no shortage of offense on the side of the Hawks.

Oakland City was able to jump out to the lead in the top of the second inning when Kyle Stuckey reached base on an error, scoring Austin Moses, and giving the Mighty Oaks the 1-0 lead. That would be all the offense that Oakland City could score in the contest as the Shorter pitching staff took over the game and shut down the Mighty Oak offense.

Shorter got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single to left field by Kaleeq Brannigan that scored Bailey Gerstner, and tied the contest at 1-1. Jakob Woods would add a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the Hawks lead to 2-1.

Shorter would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nathaniel Butterworth singled to left field scoring Brannigan, and extending the Hawks lead to 3-1.

The Hawks would put up 9 more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 12-1. Shorter got runs in the eighth on bases loaded walks by Aaron Reardon, Justin Guyton, and Luis Acevedo. Bailey Gerstner added two more runs on a two RBI single to center. Matt Christian added another on an RBI double to left. Two more runs scored when Brannigan reached on an error by the right fielder. Andres Ferreiro capped off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth when he ripped an RBI single to left field.

Chad Davis got the start of the mound for the Hawks in game 2. Davis went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, giving up 1 unearned run, and striking out 8. Carson Cook added a perfect inning in the eighth, and Sam Darling struck out 2 batters in his perfect ninth inning.

Tyler Roberts took the loss for the Mighty Oaks. Roberts threw 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, both earned, and striking out 2.

Shorter will look for the sweep in game 3 of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch between the Hawks and the Mighty Oaks is set for 1 pm eastern.
