Hawks Fall in OT

Rome - Another valiant and dramatic comeback fell short as the Shorter Hawks lost in overtime 2-1 to Lee (5-1-1) Saturday night at Ben Brady Field.

Jan Gruhn drive home a corner kick in the 88th minute to knot the game at one as the Hawks (4-3) controlled most of the second period outshooting the visitors 12-2. The Hawks pounded the Flames goal late and had a number of point blank shots denied by Lee goalkeeper Dan Hrenko.

With the momentum with the Hawks and a Lee player ejected, Shorter continued to attack in overtime until a foul call against the run of play just outside the penalty area for the Flames. Jared McWhorter bent the ball to the top right corner in the final seconds as Lee escaped 2-1.

"I don't think there was much question who should've won the game," said Hawks coach, Paul Furey. "They scored on a corner kick and a brilliant free kick and that was the difference. We were knocking on the door for most of second half but couldn't find the winner in time. Credit their keeper but I'm extremely proud of how tough we played and how we conducted ourselves with class and professionalism."

The Flames managed just two shots on goal while the Hawks had 9 shots on target and Hrenko recording 8 saves.

The Hawks are back at home Friday for another GSC matchup against Delta State.
