Rome, GA - The Hawks men's soccer team let an important win and three points slip away as Delta State scored in the 89th minute Friday night at Ben Brady Field for a 2-2 GSC tie.Â
Â
The Hawks (4-3-1) jumped out in the first half when
Val Evans converged on a penalty kick after
Thallison Alex was fouled in the box in the 31st minute.  The Hawks controlled the first half not allowing a shot or a corner kick by the visiting Statesmen. Â
Â
Delta State (3-3-1) answered just two minutes in after the intermission to tie the match a 1-1 on a Kormakur Thorsson goal.Â
Â
The Hawks regained the lead in the 68th minute when Alex set up Jackson Wheatley for his team leading 9th  goal.
Â
But sloppy defending in the final minute of play open the door for DSU as Tylor Davis got the equalizer with 30 ticks on the clock. Â
Â
In goal, the Hawks Matt Shorrocks had 6 saves while Matthew Klinck stopped 13 shots for DSU.Â
Â
"We really played a superb first half," said Hawks Coach
Paul Furey. Â "But allowing them a quick goal to start the second half energized them and they turned things up a notch. Â We should've closed the game out but credit DSU for fighting to the end. We'll learn some important lessons from this match."
Â
The Hawks will host Mississippi College at 3:30 Sunday at Ben Brady Field.Â
