Tough 2-1 Defeat Ends Hawks Playoff Hopes

ROME GA - The Hawks hopes of reaching the 8-team Gulf South Conference Tournament ended Saturday at the hands of a 2-1 setback to the University of Alabama Huntsville on Ben Brady Field. The Hawks need to win their final two games to have a shot of making the playoff.

Things did not start well for the Hawks falling behind 2-0 in the first 15 minutes to the visiting Chargers.  But true to form all season, the Hawks battle back before the half as senior, Felix Guijosa fired a shot for 25 yards to put make it 2-1 at the break.

The Hawks outshot Huntsville and had a couple of good chances but could not find the equalizer.  To add to the challenge, a Hawks defender was sent sent off for a tactical foul and had to play the final 25 minutes down a man.  The Hawks managed a couple of good looks playing with just ten men but Huntsville held on to keep their playoff hopes alive.

"As disappointing as the loss was, its hard to get upset with these guys because they left everything on the field," said Hawks Coach Paul Furey.  "We competed tough for 90 minutes even when we were playing a man down.  They took advantage of their two best chances early on but we didn't give them much of anything in the second half as they only had 2 shots."
