Rome GA - The Hawks closed out their 2019 campaign on Sunday honoring their three seniors but it was junior goalkeeper Matthew Shorrocks who stole the show in a scoreless tie against the University of West Alabama in Gulf South action at Ben Brady Field.
Shorrocks recorded 18 saves on the day, including two big stops to preserve the tie and hold off the visiting Tigers as the Hawks finished their season at 6-8-3 and 2-6-3 in the conference. The tie spoiled UWA's chance of a post season berth in the GSC playoffs.
"West Al came at us hard at times and we just had to hang on," said Hawks coach Paul Furey. "We really didn't get it going in the final third today but defensively we hung in there tough.  Matt was suburb in goal.  Can't remember the last time one of my keepers had 18 saves in a game. But he was sharp on every facet including being tough in the air and great communication.  Certainly man of the match."
"Looking back, we really had a good year. We were in every conference match and with a couple of little breaks we could've made the playoffs. I'm very proud of the way we competed this season and I know we will continue to get better," said Furey
Before the game, the Hawks honored their three seniors Felix Guijosa, Thallison Alex and Lucas Costa. It was Costa's first start of the season filling in for Hernan Saldana.
"I really have appreciated these three young men so much. They are quality individuals and were truly committed to our program," said Furey. "Felix has been a four year starter and one of our captains this year. Thallison is a great talent who scored some terrific goals the past two years.  Lucas has been a model team player and really did a superb job for us playing 110 minutes in his final game.  I'm happy and proud for all three of these guys.  They will be  missed."
