Box Score Montevallo AL - Less than 48 hours after a big shutout win at AUM Friday night, the Hawks scored 3 first half goals to propel them to a 3-2 win over the University of Montevallo Sunday afternoon.
Val Evans scored his 8th goal of the season off a set piece from
Jan Gruhn who flicked the ball from
Hernan Saldana's service. Evans header came in the 15th minute to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Four minutes later, the Hawks struck again as
Thallison Alex took advantage of a Montevallo miscue and set up
Jackson Wheatley for his league best 12th goal of the season.
Alex would create yet another Hawk opportunity when he won the ball on the right side and fired a shot that was deflected off a defender and into the Montevallo goal to make it 3-0.
Montevallo would get one back with just 4 minutes left in the first period when Vladic Margolin converted on a penalty kick.
The Hawks defense kept the host team at bay for 40 minutes behind the goalkeeping of
Matthew Shorrocks who shut down a breakaway from Nemanja Acimovic. The host Falcons did make it interesting when Acimovich knocked in a rebound in the 85th minute to make it 3-2. But the Hawks held on to complete the 2 game sweep on the road and kept their playoff chances alive.
"It was really a great weekend for us," said Hawks Coach
Paul Furey. "It was definitely tough against two very good opponents. We got off to a great start again Sunday going up 3-0. We had some quality chances to put the game away in the second half but we didn't do it and to their (UM) credit they battled back and we had to hang on for the win. I'm very proud of how we pushed through this one physically and the boys really dug deep to earn two big wins on the road."
The Hawks are back home for their final two regular season matches as they host Alabama Huntsville on Friday at 7:30 in Ben Brady Field.
