Jackson TN Â - Four of the seven Gulf South Conference games for the Hawks men's soccer team have taken them to overtime this season as Shorter falls in OT Sunday afternoon 2-1 to Union University.Â
Â
After a scoreless first half, the host Bulldogs went up 1-0 just minutes into the second period on a Gavin Scott goal. Â
Â
But the Hawks responded as they have numerous times this season when
Val Evans knocked home a loose ball inside the 6 yard box in the 53rd minute.Â
Â
The banged up Hawks (4-7-2) had their best chance to take the lead just minutes later when senior
Thallison Alex got in behind the Union defense on a pass from
Felix Guijosa but his shot just missed wide right. Â
Â
But with just three minutes remaining in the second overtime period Felipe Firmino knocked in a rebound after Hawks keeper
Matthew Shorrocks made the initial save.Â
Â
"It was definitely a gutsy effort by our guys today. We are fighting through some injuries and we battled like warriors," said  coach
Paul Furey,Â
Â
"We had a couple good chances to win the game but couldn't make it happen. I'm proud of these guys and know they'll keep fighting battling. We are right there in every match but need to figure a way to win these type of matches."
