Â
Wheatley struck first in the 8th minute on an over the headshot that found the side netting from a
Zach Wyborn cross.
Â
In the 65th minute,
Jason Ortega scored on a 25-yard rip set up by
Felix Guijosa to make it 2-0.
Â
Wheatley scored his conference-leading 12th goal of the season 7 minutes later to put the game out of reach as the Hawks improved to 5-7-2 and 1-5-2 in the GSC.
Thallison Alex was credited with the assist.Â
Â
It was AUMs (7-4-2 and 3-1-2) first conference loss but a necessary win for the Hawks to stay alive for any postseason hopes. Shorter would need to win out and hope for some help to make it to the top 8 in the GSC.
Â
"We showed a lot of grit tonight and really played a complete game in many ways," said Hawks Coach
Paul Furey.
Â
"We talked about getting the first goal and having them chase us a bit and it worked out pretty well scoring in the 8th minute. But really
Matthew Shorrocks in goal and our backline played solid against a very good team. Our midfield worked their tail off and we got goal production from our front runners -Â Great team effort and a great win for us."
Â
The Hawks have little time to enjoy the win as they are back in action Sunday at Montevallo.
