ROME --Â The Hawks topped Clark Atlanta, 4-1, Tuesday afternoon to complete the season series with the Panthers at Robert H. Ledbetter Field.
With the win, Shorter moves to 17-17 overall; while CAU moves to 8-19 on the season.
The Panthers scored first, making the most of a Hawk error to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Only to have Shorter answer in the third inning to tie the game as
Nathaniel Butterworth tallied his first homerun of the season to left field. And, after putting runners on in each of the next four innings, the Hawks broke through to take the lead with three in the eighth. First, as
Ricky Alvarez and
Victor Perez scored on a single through the left side from
Ivan Nunez. Who then scored on a single to the shortstop from
Raul Cortes for the 4-1 score.
Peyton Moore earned the win, his first of the year, holding the Panthers scoreless through two innings, allowing three hits.
Victor Santana added his third save of the year, retiring each of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Cortes, Butterworth, Alvarez and
Hunter Reaid each reached base twice in the game. Cortes and Butterworth on two hits; while Alvarez and Reaid tallied two walks apiece.
The Hawks will return to Gulf South Conference action this weekend at newcomer, Auburn Montgomery. Due to weather the series will be Sunday doubleheader, followed by a single game Monday.
