Valdosta, Ga. --Â The Hawks split the Saturday doubleheader to Valdosta State; falling in the opener 13-2, before bouncing back to take the finale 7-6.
Shorter moves to 22-22 on the season and 10-17 in the GSC; while the Blazers move to 16-25 overall and 10-16 in conference play.
GAME 1: VSU 13, SU 2
The Blazers jumped out to a big lead, scoring the game's first seven run. Before Shorter got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth on an RBI single from
Ivan Nunez and a fielder's choice from
Victor Perez.
From there Valdosta State added six runs over the next two innings to earn the 13-2 win.
Jacob Ramos took the loss, allowing six runs – four earned – on no hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Micah Wyatt added three innings of relief, allowing six runs – three earned – on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Kyle Maldonado pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowing one run on not hits with a walk.
Nunez finished 2-4 at the plate with an RBI; while
Raul Cortes and
Matt Christian each added a hit.
GAME 2: SU 7, VSU 6
The Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning as
Isaiah Maddela scored on a sacrifice fly from Perez, then as
Luis Acevedo and Ricky Alverez scored on a double from
Bailey Gerstner. Before extending their led in the third on another sacrifice fly from Perez for the 4-0 score.
Valdosta State answered in the third with a run to cut into the lead. Only to have the Hawks counter with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from
Samyr Santos and two in the sixth on a single from Maddela for the 7-1 score.
The Blazers rallied for five runs in the seventh for the 7-6 final score.
Banks Woodley earned the win, pitching the complete game; allowing nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
???????Maddela and Gerstner each tallied two hits in the game.
