Hawks power past Emmanuel

Franklin Springs, Ga. -- The Hawks came from behind Tuesday afternoon to top Emmanuel 16-7 to complete the season sweep.

With the win, Shorter moves to 21-21 on the season; while the Lions move to 16-22 overall.

Emmanuel jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, after the first inning. Only to have the Hawks come back with a run in the second on a solo homerun from Isaiah Maddela and a run in the fourth as Samyr Santos came in on an error by the third baseman for the 4-2 score.

The Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2, before the Hawks cut it back to two in the sixth on a solo homerun from Raul Cortes. Emmanuel then countered with two in the sixth to make it a 7-3 game.

From there, however, it was all Shorter as they tacked on 13 unanswered runs for the 16-7 final score. Luis Acevedo notched a 2-run homer in the seventh to make it a 7-5 game, before Ethan Radcliffe brought in Ivan Nunez on a single and Victor Perez brought in Cortes for the 8-7 game in the Hawks favor.

Shorter then added eight in the ninth to put the game away. Radcliffe led off the scoring, coming in on an error. Before, Santos scored when Angel Acosta reached based on catcher's interference and Maddela came in on a walk to Acevedo. Matt Christian and Nunez then went back-to-back with homeruns – Christian's grand slam to give the Hawks the 15-7 lead.

Victor Santana earned the win, keeping the Lions scoreless and without a hit; while allowing a walk and striking out two through two innings of relief. Trey Urban made the start, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Cates pitched the final inning, retiring each of the three batters he faced with a strikeout.

In total, the Hawks tallied 13 hits with six going for extra bases – including five homeruns. Radcliffe and Santos each finished with three hits apiece.

Shorter will look to keep the momentum going this weekend as they travel to Valdosta for the final road GSC series of the season with postseason hopes on the line. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 3:00pm and 6:00pm from Billy Grant Field and Blazer Park.
