Baseball earns season sweep of No. 10 Georgia College

Milledgeville, Ga. -- The Hawks topped No. 10 Georgia College 13-6 Wednesday afternoon on the road in non-conference play.

With the win, Shorter moves to 20-18 overall on the season; while the Bobcats move to 27-8 on the year. The win is the Hawks third of the season over a Top-10 opponent and snaps an 11-game win streak for GC.

Georgia College got on the board first, scoring twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Only to have the Hawks comeback in the second to tie the game as Luis Acevedo brought in Hunter Reaid and Victor Perez on an RBI triple. And, took the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Matt Christian for the 3-2 score.

The Bobcats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 4-3 score in their favor. Again, however, the Hawks answered with two of their own to take a 5-4 lead. First as Acevedo tallied an RBI double to bring in Perez and came in to score himself on an RBI single from Nathaniel Butterworth.

The bottom of the sixth saw Georgia College regain the advantage with two runs to make it a 6-5 game. In the seventh, however, Samyr Santos tied things up with a solo homerun to left field. Before Shorter added two in the eighth for the 8-6 score. Raul Cortes put the Hawks ahead with an RBI double to bring in Butterworth, before coming in to score later in the inning on an RBI single from Isaiah Maddela.

The Hawks then put the game out of reach for the Bobcats with five in the ninth – all with two outs – for the 13-6 score as Maddela, Reaid and Christian each tallied RBI singles.

In total the Hawks recorded 21 hits with every player getting into the hit column at least once. Perez lead the effort with a 5-5 day at the plate with a walk and four runs scored. Reaid finished 4-6 with two RBI; while Butterworth added three hits and two runs. Cortes, Santos, Maddela and Acevedo each added two hits apiece.

Micah Wyatt earned the win, his second of the season, allowing no runs on one hit through three innings of relief.

The Hawks will look to keep the momentum going this weekend as they host Montevallo in Gulf South Conference play. Due to weather expected Saturday, the series has been moved up a day and will be a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12:00pm and a single game Saturday, also beginning at 12:00pm.
