St. Louis --Â The Hawks fell to Maryville, 7-4, Saturday afternoon on the road.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the GLVC; while the Saints improve to 5-8 on the season and 2-2 in the conference play.
Maryville struck first, scoring the first goal of the game with eleven minutes to play in the first quarter. The Hawks tied the game just before the end of the quarter on the fourteenth goal of the year from
Logan Miller for the 1-1 score to start the second frame.
In the second quarter, Shorter added two goals – from
Jacob Woodard and
Matt McHugh – to take at 3-1 lead into the halftime break.
In the third, Maryville cut the lead to one, before the Hawks made it a 4-2 game with a score from
Chase Rogers. The Saints then tied the game on back to back goals to move to the final quarter with a 4-4 score.
The final period was all Maryville, as the Saints tacked on three goals – all from Owen Kehoe – for the 7-4 final score.
In total, Maryville outshot the Hawks 38-26; while holding a slim 19-18 advantage in shots on goal. And lead in ground balls 27-18. Neither team was successful during extra man opportunities, and the Hawks tallied five face-off wins.
Individually,
Chris Woodard and Miller led the way with three ground balls apiece; while
Jakob Braun posted a team high two caused turnovers.
Garry Robinson made 12 saves in goal over a complete game performance.
The Hawks are back in action next Friday evening, March 30, Â as Young Harris comes to Ben Brady Field for a 7:00pm start.
