Hawks fall to Young Harris in conference play

ROME -- The Hawks fell to Young Harris, 23-6, Friday evening in Great Lakes Valley Conference play from Ben Brady Field.

With the loss, Shorter slips to 1-10 on the season and 0-3 in the GLVC; while the Mountain Lions improve to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Hawks opened the game on a high note, scoring the back-to-back goals to start things off. First, as Tate Tatum found the back of the new with just over twelve minutes to play, before Chase Rogers followed with a score on a pass from Chris Woodard moments later. Young Harris countered with a goal, to cut the lead to one, but Shorter answered with Logan Miller's first of the night to keep the two-point advantage with eight minutes remaining. The Mountain Lions added a final goal in quarter, to take a 3-2 score in the Hawks' favor into the second frame.

The second was all YHC, as the Mountain Lions added eight, while holding Shorter scoreless for to hold a 10-3 lead at halftime.

In the third, Miller added a second goal of the game to make it a 11-4 game, but the Hawks weren't able to get any closer as Young Harris tallied three consecutively to maintain the advantage.

Rogers opened the scoring in the fourth, with a man-up tally with 14:21 to play, making it a 14-5 game. Only to have the Mountain Lions record the next nine to push their advantage to 23-5. Before Jordan Coates added a final tally for the Hawks as the final seconds wound down, for the 23-6 final score.

In total, YHC outshot the Hawks 43-23, while holding a 34-13 advantage in shots on goal and a 34-21 lead in ground balls.

Miller and Rogers led the offense with two goals apiece, with each taking three shots as well. Brodie Gonzalez was 9-26 on the face-off with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Garry Robinson and Richard Ticer split time in goal, making six and five saves, respectively.

The Hawks will be back in action on the road in a non-conference matchup at Huntingdon on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:00pm ET.
