Hawks split doubleheader with No. 2 Delta State

Cleveland, Miss. -- After falling in the opener 10-3, the Hawks came back in the finale with a 9-2 win to earn the doubleheader split with No. 2 Delta State.

Shorter moves to 12-16 on the season and 4-10 in conference play; while the Statesmen move to 20-5 overall and 11-2 in the GSC.

GAME 1: DSU 10, SU 3
The Statesmen scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second; only to the Hawks come back in the second to tie the game on an RBI double from Luis Acevedo. Delta State regained the advantage in the fourth with three runs. Before Shorter added a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Victor Perez to make it a 5-2 game, but that would be as closed as they'd get as DSU added four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-2. Raul Cortes delivered his first homerun of the day in the seventh for the 9-3 score. Delta State added a final run in the eighth for the 10-3 score.

Victor Santana took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits with seven walks and strikeout. While, Tyler Cates pitched the final three innings, allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Micah Wyatt finished the game 3-4 at the plate; while Acevedo and Cortes finished with two hits apiece.

GAME 2: SU 9, DSU 2
Shorter set the tone for the game early, scoring three runs in the first on homeruns from Cortes and Maddela. Before an RBI single from Cortes and a two-run homer from Acevedo made it a 6-0 advantage in favor of the Hawks in the second.

Delta State broke through in the bottom of the inning on Clay Casey's first homerun of the game. Only to have the Hawks counter with a run in the fourth for the 7-1 score, on a double from Acevedo. Casey homered again in the fifth to cut into the lead. But, the Hawks answered with two runs in the sixth for the 9-2 final score. Cortes led off the inning with his third homerun of the day, and Samyr Santos came in later in the inning on an error.

Banks Woodley pitched the complete game for the Hawks; allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts, to move to 4-2 on the season.

Cortes finished 3-4 at the plate with three RBI; while Acevedo and Santos finished with two hits apiece.
