Baseball splits with West Georgia

ROME -- The Hawks split the Friday doubleheader with West Georgia. Falling in the opener 9-2, before bouncing back to win the finale 2-1.

Shorter moves to 10-14 overall and 3-8 in the GSC; while the Wolves move to 16-7 on the season and 6-5 in conference play.

GAME 1: UWG 9, SU 2
West Georgia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, before adding to it in the sixth with two runs to make it a 4-0 game. Shorter got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun from Matt Christian to cut in to the lead. Only to have the Wolves extend their advantage with five runs in the seventh to make it a 9-1 game. The Hawks then added a run in the ninth – on sacrifice fly from Isaiah Maddela – for the 9-2 final score.

Victor Santana took the loss; allowing four runs on five hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts through six innings of work.

Samyr Santos, Blake Metcalf and Christian each finished with a hit.

GAME 2: SU 2, UWG 1
The Hawks made it a 2-0 game in the first with back-to-back homeruns from Santos and Maddela to take the lead. West Georgia then cut the lead in half in the fifth with a run and threatened in the seventh but couldn't push another run across as Shorter held on for the 2-1 win.

Banks Woodley earned the win, pitching the complete game; allowing one run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Santos and Raul Cortes each tallied two hits in the game.

The Hawks will be back in action Saturday afternoon in the series finale with West Georgia. Game time is set for 12:00pm from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
