Hawks fall to Embry-Riddle, 13-5

ROME -- The Hawks fell to Embry-Riddle, 13-5, Tuesday afternoon at home.

With the loss, Shorter moves to 1-8 on the season; while the Eagles earned their first-ever win and move to 1-5 overall.

Embry-Riddle jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring all within the first five minutes of play. The Hawks finally broke through with their first score of the game as Jordan Coates found the back of the net with 4:39 remaining in the period for the 3-1 score. Only to have the Eagles answer with a fourth goal to regain the margin. Chase Rogers score in the final minute to cut the lead to two, 4-2, heading into the second quarter.

Embry-Riddle pulled away in the second, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 7-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Shorter opened the third with a score – a second from Coates – to make it a 7-3 game. The Eagles countered, however, with three straight to make it a 10-3 game with thirty-second remaining in the quarter. Before the Hawks answered with a score from Logan Miller seconds later to move into the final fifteen minutes with the 10-4 score.

In the fourth, Embry-Riddle again score three times, to extend their lead to 13-4 with five minutes to play. Shorter then tallied a final goal with just under two minutes remaining for the 13-5 final score.

In total, the Eagles outshot the Hawks 33-25 while holding a 24-15 advantage in shots on goal and a 25-20 lead in ground balls.

Coates and Rogers each finished with two goals; while Tate Tatum tallied two assists. Coates also led the way with five ground balls. Whereas on defense, Chris Woodard and River Ledbetter finished with three caused turnovers and four ground balls apiece. Richard Ticer played the complete game in goal, turning in 11 saves.

The Hawks will have ten days off before returning to action in a Great Lakes Valley matchup with Maryville in St. Louis, Missouri on March 23.
