ROME --Â The Hawks topped Miles College, 10-2, in a non-conference midweek matchup at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Shorter moves to 2-2 on the season; while the Golden Bears slip to 4-2 overall.
Samyr Santos got the Hawks started in the first inning with his first homerun of the season – a two run shot to left field, that plated
Ivan Nunez, for the 2-0 score. Shorter added to it in the second to extend their lead to four, on an RBI single from
Matt Christian – his first of the year, and as Nunez stole home as part of a double steal with
Isaiah Maddela.
The 4-0 score stood until the fifth, when Miles struck for their first run of the game when Justin Bisharat came in on an error from Santos after stealing third. The Hawks, however, answered in the bottom of the inning to extend their advantage; making it a 6-1 game on RBI singles from Maddela and
Victor Perez.
Miles struck for a second run in the sixth, on a solo homerun from Jacob Bisharat. Only to have the Hawks tack on four over the next two innings for the 10-2 final score. In the seventh, Maddela came in on a sacrifice fly from Perez; while
Luis Acevedo did the same on a sacrifice fly from
Raul Cortes in the eighth. Before the final runs scored on a 2-RBI single from Maddela after Miles intentionally walked Santos to load the bases.
Grant Jacobs earned the win in his Shorter debut; allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts through six innings of work.
Maddela and Nunez each finished the day with three hits; while Perez and Christian recorded two hits apiece.
The Hawks will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Young Harris for a three-game set. Due to impending inclement weather the original schedule has been altered the teams will square off in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00pm on Thursday, before a single game on Friday at 1:00pm.
