Jackson, Tenn. -- The Hawks earned the series win over Union with a 9-4 win in game one, before falling in the finale 4-3 to earn the split for the afternoon.
Shorter moves to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play; while the Bulldogs move to 5-8 on the season and 1-2 in the GSC.
GAME 1: SU 9, UU 4
Union got on the board first, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first. Only to have the Hawks come back in the second with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Shorter's first run of the game came as
Hunter Reaid delivered an RBI single to plate
Victor Perez.
Bailey Gerstner then scored on a ground out from
Luis Acevedo and
Matt Christian delivered an RBI double to bring in Reaid.
The Hawks then added to it in the fourth, with four runs, to make it a 7-1 game as Gerstner and Reaid scored on errors and
Isaiah Maddela delivered a two-run homerun to left field to bring in
Blake Metcalfe. Union struck for two in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-3.
Both teams added a run in the fifth to make it an 8-4 game, before the Hawks tacked on a final run in the sixth for the 9-4 score. Union threated in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but were held scoreless as Eli Thibado flied out and Brady Cook struck out looking to end the inning.
Banks Woodley earned the win, to move to 2-1 on the season; allowing four run on eleven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Micah Wyatt earned the save, pitching the final 2.2 innings; keeping the Bulldogs scoreless on two hits with four strikeouts.
GAME 2: UU 4, SU 3
The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the game on an infield single from
Angel Acosta to plate
Raul Cortes in the second inning and added to it in the third on a two-run single from Cortes to make it a 3-0 game.
Only to have the Bulldogs rally for four runs in the bottom of the third for the 4-3 final score.
Jacob Ramos took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts through the complete game, six innings.
Cortes finished the game 2-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Acevedo also added two hits for the game.
Shorter will be back on short-rest as the Hawks host Georgia College Tuesday afternoon in a 1:00pm start from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
