Hawks come from behind to top Union

Jackson, Tenn. -- The Hawks came from behind to top Union, 5-3, in the Gulf South Conference opener.

With the win, Shorter moves to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the GSC; while the Bulldogs slip to 4-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

The Hawks got on the board first, as Ivan Nunez came in on a sacrifice fly in the first inning after reaching on an error to open the game. Only to have Union answer in the bottom of the inning to tie things up, before extending their lead to 3-1 in the second.

Shorter countered in the third on a solo homerun from Samyr Santos and tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double from Santos, plating Matt Christian. Santos then provided the late heroics, with a two-run homer in the eight – bringing Isaiah Maddela; who reach on a triple – for the 5-3 score.

Union threatened in the bottom of the ninth but stranded a runner on third as Nolen Milton struck out to end the game.

Santos finished 3-4 at the plate with four RBI, with all three hits going for extra bases.

Victor Santana earned the win, pitching the final 2.1 innings; allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts. Trey Urban made the start, lasting 1.2 innings; allowing three runs – one earned – on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. While, Peyton Moore recorded five innings; keeping the Bulldogs scoreless on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Hawks will be back in action from Jackson, Tenn. Monday afternoon for a doubleheader to complete the series against Union. Game one is set to begin at 1:00pm ET.
