Big inning leads baseball to 14-3 win over Clark Atlanta

ROME -- The Hawks topped Clark Atlanta, 14-3, Tuesday afternoon from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

With the win, Shorter moves to 6-6 on the season; while the Panthers slip to 3-7 overall.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning as they sent thirteen batters to the plate, pounding out nine runs on seven hits to make it a 9-0 game after one inning.
Isaiah Maddela got things going, plating Ivan Nunez on his second homerun of the season. Before Bailey Gerstner delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, with the bases loaded. Matt Christian followed with a two-run single to center field to make it a 6-0 game, and Nunez turned in an RBI double one batter later. Victor Perez then notched a two-run single for the 9-0 score.

Luis Acevedo extended the Hawks lead in the third with an RBI double down the right field line to plate Maddela to make it a 10-0 game.

And, in the fourth, Shorter broke through for four more, to extend the advantage. First as Christian delivered his first homerun of the year, plating Nick San Marty. Then, as Perez added an RBI single to bring in Nunez, and Nathaniel Butterworth delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Ethan Radcliffe to being the score to 14-0.

Clark Atlanta avoided the shutout with three runs in the fifth for the 14-3 final score.

Shorter used five pitchers in the game, with Jesse Wheeler making the start and going two innings; allowing no runs on two hits with a strikeout. Caleb Battles followed with two innings; allowing one hit and striking out four. Victor Santana earned the win, pitching the fifth inning; allowing three runs on three hits with a strikeout. Before giving way to Jacob Farmer and Micah Wyatt for the final two innings.

In total, the Hawks finished with 14 hits in the game, with Nunez, Maddela, Perez, Acevedo, Gerstner and Christian all turning in two apiece. Christian lead the way with four RBI; while Perez added three.

The Hawks open Gulf South Conference play Saturday at Union with the doubleheader set to begin at 2:00pm ET.
