Oakland City tops Hawks, 5-3

ROME -- The Hawks fell to Oakland City, 5-3, Sunday afternoon in the series finale from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

With the loss, Shorter moves to 5-6 on the season; while the Mighty Oaks earn their first win of the year and move to 1-2 overall.

The Hawks got on the board first, scoring one in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Bailey Gerstner. Only to have Oakland City counter with two in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Shorter responded in the bottom of the inning for one to tie the game, as Luis Acevedo came in on a sacrifice fly to right from Isaiah Maddela.

The Mighty Oaks regained the lead, with three in fourth, all after two outs were recorded – taking advantage of two Hawk errors. The Hawks had runners in every inning but were only able to manage one run – in the seventh – when Acevedo scored on a single up the middle from Maddela for the 5-3 final score.

Banks Woodley took the loss, allowing five runs – all unearned – on ten hits with nine strikeouts through seven innings of work.

Maddela led the offensive effort, finishing the day 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI.

The Hawks will look to get back in the win column Tuesday as they host Clark Atlanta in a non-conference matchup, before opening GSC play at Union next weekend.
