ROME --Â The Hawks swept the non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon to take the series over Oakland City. Winning the opening 5-4, before taking the finale 16-3.
With the wins, Shorter moves to 5-5 on the season; while the Mighty Oaks start the year 0-2.
Game One – SU 5, OCU 4
Oakland City scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer from Reed Farmer. The Hawks came back with a run in the fourth as
Samyr Santos tallied his fourth homerun of the year, to cut the lead in half. Before making it a 3-2 game in the fifth on a two-run double from
Isaiah Maddela.
Only to have the Mighty Oaks regain the advantage in the sixth on a two-run homer from Tyler Stolz. Shorter countered in the bottom of the inning with two runs; on a sacrifice fly from
Matt Christian and as
Angel Acosta stole home as part of a double steal for the 5-4 score.
Trey Urban earned the win, allowing three earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts. While,
Victor Santana recorded his second save of the season, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts through three innings.
Game Two – SU 16, OCU 3
The Hawks got on the board first in game two, scoring twice in the second – on an RBI single from
Luis Acevedo and a sacrifice fly from
Raul Cortes. Before, Oakland City tied things up in the third with a two-run homer.
From there, however, it was all Shorter as the Hawks tacked on fourteen runs over the next three innings.
In the third, Santos notched his second homerun of the day to make it a 3-2 game, before
Ethan Radcliffe scored on a ground out and Cortes plated three on a double to right field to bring the Hawks' advantage to 7-2. In the fourth, Santos came home as part of the double steal.
And, in the fifth Shorter broke through with eight runs for the 16-2 score. Oakland City rallied for a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk for the 16-3 final score.
Jacob Ramos earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts through five innings of work.
The Hawks will look to earn the series sweep Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Game time is set for 1:00pm from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
