Jefferson City, Tenn. --Â The Hawks came up short Tuesday afternoon against Carson-Newman in non-conference action.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 3-5 on the season; while the Eagles tallied their fifth straight win to move to 5-2 overall.
CNU got on the board first, scoring four times in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Only to have the Hawks the tack on two in the third to cut the lead in half. First, as
Matt Christian scored on an RBI single from
Isaiah Maddela; then, as
Raul Cortes came in on a sacrifice fly to left center by
Victor Perez. The Eagles countered in the bottom of the inning to make it a 5-2 game.
Before Shorter added two in the fourth to once again cut the lead to one, 5-4, on an RBI double from Cortes and a sacrifice fly from
Bailey Gerstner. Carson-Newman extended its lead back to two, 6-4, on an RBI single from Cade Snapp in the sixth.
The Hawks threatened in the seventh, scoring once to make it a 6-5 game, but left the bases loaded as
Angel Acosta struck out swinging to end the inning.
Grant Jacobs took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and strikeout through two innings of work. While,
Michael Young,
Caleb Battles,
Peyton Moore,
Jacob Ramos and
Banks Woodley each added an inning in relief.
On the afternoon, both Maddela and Cortes finished with two hits apiece.
The Hawks will return to the Ledbetter Baseball Complex Saturday to begin a three-game series with Oakland City.Â
