Hawks earn hard-fought win over West Alabama

Livingston, Ala. -- After a back and forth game throughout, the Hawks came away with the win, 78-75, over West Alabama on the road Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Shorter moves to 2-13 on the season and 2-5 in conference play; while the Tigers move to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the GSC.

During the game, the lead changed 13 times; while also seeing eight tied scores. Both teams shot over 46 percent for the game, but the biggest difference came as Shorter converted 13 of 24 from beyond the arc, accounting for 39 of the Hawks 78 points.

Shorter trailed at the break, by three, 37-34, but made the necessary adjustments in the second half to outscore the home team 44-38 through the final twenty minutes.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Tigers extended their lead to six (44-38) on a layup from Josh Fleming. But, the Hawks fought back, using a 7-0 run capped by a three from TayVaughn Major to take a 45-44 lead with 14:30 remaining. From there the teams traded baskets, until UWA once again made it a six-point game 54-48 on a three from Jake Jobling midway through. Shorter answered to regain the advantage – on another three from Major for the 56-54 score with 10:19 to go. Before extending the advantage to eight (69-61) on a 13-7 run, capped by a layup from Major with 6:22 on the clock.

UWA answered to erase the lead, tying the game at 71 with just under two minutes to play and held a two-point advantage with 1:01 remaining. The Tigers then forced a Hawk turnover, and looked to put the game away with twenty second to play, only to have Fleming's jumper miss. Josh Burnett collected the rebound and converted his second three of the game with nine seconds to play to put Shorter up 76-75. West Alabama would then have a last second attempt fall short, before Burnett converted a pair of free throws in the final second for the 78-75 score.

Major led the Hawks with 23 points in the game, finishing 7-9 from the field and 4-4 from beyond the arc. While, Burnett posted a double-double of 21 points, 10 rebounds. Amonte Potter rounded out the list of Hawks in double figures with 19 points.

Charles Eaton led the Tigers with a game high 31 points.

The Hawks will look to keep the momentum going Tuesday as they travel to Montevallo for the first matchup with the Falcons since they rejoined the GSC this season. Game time is set for 8:30 PM ET/7:30 PM CT.
