ROME --Â The Hawks earned their first win of the season, and their first under head coach
Paul Furey, as they turned in a late goal to down Delta State, 1-0, at home.
Shorter improves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference with the win, while the Statesmen slip to 2-3-1 on the season and 0-2 in the GSC.
The game remained scoreless through the first half, with the Hawks dominating play on offense, holding Delta State to just two shots in the frame while tallying nine of their own. The difference in the game, however, came in the 77th minute as
Federico Cordiano netted a header off a corner kick from
Felix Guijosa. From there the Hawks looked to extend their lead, only to have both attempts from Guijosa go wide. While, Delta State looked to tie things up, but saw their rally fall short when one shot went over the goal and the second was saved by Shorter 'keeper,
Sean Carpenter, to secure his first clean sheet of the season and the win.
In total, the Hawks notched a 14-7 advantage in shots, while only holding a slim 3-1 lead in shots on goal. With five different players – Cordiano, Guijosa,
Antonio Ciardiello,
Jimmy Cano, and
Timothy Dowd – tallying two shots apiece.
The Hawks will look to keep the momentum going as they begin a four-game road swing on Friday, September 22, at Union. Game time is set for 8:00pm ET.Â
