Jacksonville, Fla. -- The Hawks fell in their season opener Thursday afternoon, 4-3, in overtime to Trinity Baptist.
Shorter came out firing, scoring twice in the first nine minutes. First as
Mattia Pace found the back of the net for the first time in his Shorter career, and then as
Justen Macias posted his first goal as a Hawk – he finished with two assists last season.
Only to have the hosts fire back to tie the game at two on back-to-back goals with 18:55 to play, before taking the lead 3-2 in the 39th minute on the foot of Clayton McDaniel.
The Hawks closed out the opening frame with a final goal, just before the break, from
Dian Momanyi.
Tied 3-3, the teams sat through a rain delay of close to an hour and half, before resuming play in the second half. The game remained tied, moving to extra time; where Trinity Baptist got the golden goal eight minutes in for the 4-3 final score.
Both teams placed eight shots on goal, while the Eagles held a 23-14 advantage in the total shots.
The Hawks continue their tour of the Sunshine State at Florida Southern on Saturday, before closing out the trip at Florida Tech on Monday. Game time are set for 7:00pm and 12:00pm, respectively.
