ROME -- The Hawks swept the doubleheader with West Florida Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex; winning the opener 6-5, before taking the finale 7-3.
Shorter improves to 22-21 overall and 11-18 in conference play; while the Argos slip to 24-21 on the season and 15-14 in the GSC.
The Hawks got on the board first in game one as
Blaze Vazquez hit his first homerun of the afternoon for the 1-0 score. West Florida answered in the second inning, taking the lead on a 2-run double from Chase Keifer. Only to have Shorter counter in the bottom of the frame to tie things up on
Patrick Sanderson's first homerun of the game.
The Hawks added three in the fourth to make it a 5-2 game as
Luis Acevedo scored on an RBI single from
Raul Cortes,
Jack Leech walked with the bases loaded, and Cortes came in on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, the Argos cut into the lead as Robert Lopez delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating Justin Ambrosino. Sanderson added his second homer of the game in the fifth to make it a 6-3 game, before West Florida added two final runs – one each in the sixth and seventh – for the 6-5 score.
Jacob Ramos earned the win, his fifth of the year, allowing five runs – four earned – on eleven hits with three walks; while
Jason Gifford earned the save after working the final three innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
In game two the Hawks came back from a three run deficit to score seven runs for the 7-3 final score.
The Argos took the lead with a run in the first and two in the second, before Shorter worked to tie the game in the third on RBI singles from
Dustin Lawson and
Isaiah Maddela.
Vazquez then gave his team the lead in the fifth on a solo homerun for the 4-3 score. And, in the sixth the Hawks broke through for three runs after two outs were recorded. Nunez, pinch running for Acevedo, scored the inning's first run on an RBI single from
Bailey Gerstner; who scored one batter later on a homerun from Lawson to make it a 7-3 game.
Banks Woodley earned the win, keeping the Argos scoreless through six innings of relief; allowing two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Cortes and Sanderson each went 3-3 in game one; while Gerstner tallied a 3-3 game in the finale.
The Hawks will look to earn the series sweep Sunday afternoon; game time is set for 1:00pm.
