Hawks complete series sweep of MC

Clinton, Miss. -- The Hawks completed the series sweep of Mississippi College Sunday afternoon, topping the Choctaws 15-4.

Shorter improves to 12-5 on the season and 4-5 in conference play; while MC slips to 2-17 overall and 0-9 in the GSC.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, scoring four in the first inning. First as William Winslow and Blaze Vazquez came in on a single from Jack Leech. And, later in the inning, when Isaiah Maddela and Dustin Lawson were plated on a single from Bailey Gerstner and a throwing error by the second baseman.

In the second, Shorter made it an 8-0 game with four runs on two-run homers from Winslow and Maddela. The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to make it an 8-2 game.

The Hawks added four more in the third inning to extend the lead to 12-2 on a three-run homer from Vazquez and an RBI single from Lawson. Before, MC answered in the bottom of the inning with a third run on a ground out from Blaine Grim.

Raul Cortes hit his fourth homerun of the year – a two-run shot to left center – in the fourth to make it a 14-3 game and Maddela added his second of the game in the sixth to bring the score to 15-3. The Choctaws then added a run in the seventh for the 15-4 final score.

Jerry Liang earned the win, his second of the season, pitching the complete game; allowing four runs on ten hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Hawks tallied 17 hits on the day with Vazquez finishing the day with four; while Lawson, Maddela, and Gerstner added two apiece.

Shorter will be back in action Tuesday and Wednesday when they take on Saginaw Valley State in Augusta, Ga.
