Hawks split with Saginaw Valley

Augusta, Ga. -- The Hawks split the non-conference series with Saginaw Valley this week, taking the opener 6-1 before falling in the finale 11-1.

Shorter moves to 13-6 overall; while the Cardinals move to 3-8 on the year.

In Tuesday's game, the Hawks took the lead early; scoring two in the second inning. First, as Isaiah Maddela scored on a wild pitch, then as Patrick Sanderson came in on a sacrifice fly from Raul Cortes.

Shorter added to it in the fourth when Maddela came in on an error by the catcher to extend the Hawks' lead to 3-0. Saginaw Valley answered in the bottom of the inning with their lone run of the game to make it a 3-1 game.

Shorter tacked on two in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 6-1 final score.

Tyler Buchanan earned the win for the Hawks, to move to 2-1 on the year; allowing no runs on one hit with six strikeouts through five inning of work.

Maddela finished the game with two hits; while Bailey Gerstner added a hit and two walks. Ty Cherry also drew two walks.

In Wednesday's game, the Hawks fell behind 6-0 after the third, before scoring their only run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third on a ground out from William Winslow to bring in Cortes. From there the Cardinals added five runs – four in the sixth and one in the seventh – for the 11-1 final score.

Harrison Shubert took the loss; allowing four earned runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts through three inning of work.

Jack Leech finished the game with two hits; while seven other Hawks tallied one.

Shorter will be back in action Saturday and Sunday at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex when they host Valdosta State for a three game, Gulf South Conference series. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 11:00am; while Sunday's single game begins at 1:00pm.
